Binchotan charcoal BBQ, originating from Japan, offers a unique grilling experience prized for its clean, high-heat cooking. Crafted from oak or ubame oak, this charcoal is dense and burns steadily, producing minimal smoke and imparting a distinct, smoky flavor to grilled foods. Its high carbon content enables intense heat, ideal for searing meats while locking in juices. Binchotan's purity ensures no unwanted flavors taint the food. Its longevity allows for multiple uses, making it economical. Moreover, its low-ash production simplifies cleanup. Embraced by chefs and barbecue enthusiasts worldwide, Binchotan charcoal BBQ elevates outdoor cooking with its superior heat control and unparalleled flavor infusion.

How to light?
Using a Charcoal Chimney would be the best. Place the binchotan into the charcoal chimney.

Place half a box of the firestarter (Peacock or rooster brand) in a pile. Light it up. Once the fire is going, Place the charcoal chimney on top. It will take approximately 1 hour for the binchotan to be hot enough. You will know it is ready, when the charcoal turns red throughout.

Transfer the red charcoal onto the Charcoal BBQ.

How many kgs would I require?

To fully fill up a Weber charcoal 27 inch, you will need approximately 5kg (or 2 packs of Binchotan Charcoal). Once red hot, it can last about 2 - 3 hours. If unsure, always buy an extra pack of charcoal.

How to light the Binchotan (Instructions from supplier May 2025)

Option 1 :  Gas stove + charcoal chimney

The most efficient way to light binchotan is by placing it in a charcoal chimney and heating it over a gas.

Option 2 : Binchotan + Mangrove charcoal
Alternatively, you can mix it with mangrove charcoal to help kickstart the burn. Because binchotan is very dense and hard, it requires more charcoal around it to sustain combustion. If there isn’t enough supporting charcoal, the fire may eventually die out.
